[ABSTRACT] This 400 square foot laboratory houses the storage and research of native and invasive orchid species within the Miami Tropical Botanical Garden, a property that also serves the public as an education center for native plants and as the site of a weekly farmers market. Walls of locally quarried oolite root the small volume to the South Florida landscape, weathering naturally in the humid climate. A timber pergola shades a raised wood terrace for researchers and visitors, while wood louvers and a perforated concrete block screen filter light and draw breeze through the interior. Native plantings and stone pavers dissolve the edge between building and garden, so the laboratory reads as a working extension of the collection it protects.
