Comprehensive Studio: Culinary School and Market
Wynwood is an eclectic neighborhood South of Miami’s design district that primarily adheres to the art and design industry. This design proposes a new culinary institute with a connected fresh market whose inventory sources from the gardening creations executed by the students and faculty. With current trends in farm-to-table eating, this attraction would be a revitalizing resource for the area and would allow students to showcase their skills to greater Miami. The site contains an existing warehouse space that is required to remain, which the design transforms into a spacious market place that opens to a beautiful courtyard for student collaboration. The building consists of five stories with an extending fifth floor to protect the outdoor balcony circulation on each floor below from intense sunlight. Outdoor circulation creates a fresh-air atmosphere which research proves to increase focus and learning. The vertical circulation is contained by wood paneling that is gorgeously accented with adhering home-grown Florida bougainvillea, a vine that climbs vertical surfaces and blooms incredible fuscia flowers.
Comprehensive studio requires that all structural, heating/cooling, and lighting elements be determined mathematically according to engineering standards and be mapped out within the architecture realistically. The building maintains a flawless column grid consistent with that of the existing warehouse. Each beam, joist, floor deck, air duct, and light fixture are precisely sized according to their corresponding requirements and form a systematic harmony.
